The average of the RGB content of the upper layer is taken as a value indication from 0-100.0%. This value component replaces the value content of the lower layer composite. This is the "V" in HSV.

Where the higher layer is partially transparent, the result is mixed with the lower layer composite in a manner proportional to the amount of transparency.

Tip: If you're looking to apply the value from one image to another, you want the Value layer mode.
