Light areas in the layer are screened on to the sublayer composite, while dark areas in the layer are multiplied onto the sublayer composite. At 50% grey channel value (32768), there is no effect.

Where the higher layer is partially transparent, the content is mixed with the lower layer composite in a manner proportional to the amount of transparency.
