§ 19.6.3 - Priority Blend Modes

§ 19.6.3.1 - Brighten

This mode replaces the lower channel composite value with the upper channel where the luma of the upper channel composite is brighter than the luma of the lower channel composite.

Brighten will be identical to Maximum when the content of the adjustment layer is greyscale.

Where the higher layer is partially transparent, the result is mixed with the lower layer composite in a manner proportional to the amount of transparency.
