Where average value of the the upper channels is brighter than 50% (32768), hue is increased (moves in a positive direction around the color wheel.) Where the average values of the upper channels is darker than 50%, hue is decreased (moves in a negative direction around the color wheel.) The range is 45° decrease to 45° increase.

Where the higher layer is partially transparent, the result is mixed with the lower layer composite in a manner proportional to the amount of transparency.
