Carrington Event


Richard Carrington
The Carrington Event was the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history. It peaked on September first and second in 1859 during solar cycle 10.

It created bright auroral displays that were reported globally and its electromagnetic effects caused sparking and fires in telegraph stations due to the long wires between stations acting as inductive pickups.

It is named for Richard Carrington, one of two astronomers who first observed the solar event. The other was Richard Hodgson.

A modern concern is based on the extreme intensity of this specific event, and what will happen if another like it occurs. Today, we have far more, and longer, wires, far more sensitive equipment, and critical satellites that are directly exposed to high energy events.

One can only hope that our modern electrical and electronic infrastructure would remain unaffected due to — presumably — careful design and foreknowledge.
